The brick masonry construction proceeds very quickly whereas the stone masonry construction proceeds vary slowly as the bricks are handy whereas stones are not. The stone masonry in which either undressed or roughly dressed stone are laid in a suitable mortar is called rubble masonry. In this masonry the joints are not of uniform. Masonry is built from accurately dressed stones in uniform and fine joints of about 3 mm thickness by arranging the stone blocks in various patterns.

The thickness of stone wall should not be smaller 406mm 16 in in any case. The minimum thickness of parapet wall can be assumed to be 203mm 8 inch and its height should not be larger than three times the wall thickness. The size of stones blocks should be in proportion to wall thickness. The art of building a structure in stone with any suitable masonry is called stone masonry.

The minimum thickness of random rubble work that can be constructed with great care is 225 mm 9 and with ease 300 mm 1 ft. Ashlar masonry this type of masonry is built from accurately dressed stones with uniform and fine joints of about 3mm thickness by arranging the stone blocks in various patterns. The offsets to be provided in rubble masonry construction have to be 75 mm 3 inches on either side. The backing of ashlar masonry walls may be built of ashlar masonry or rubble masonry.

Thickness of non load bearing masonry walls. Stone masonry may be broadly classified into the following two types. Empirically designed unreinforced bearing walls of one story buildings must be at least 6 in. Random rubble masonry is the first variety of stone masonry.

The minimum thickness of wall in stone masonry can be 35 cm whereas in brick masonry walls of 10 cm thickness can be constructed. Decrease the stone thickness from the bottom to the top of wall. The backing of masonry ashlar walls may be built of ashlar masonry or rubble masonry. Ensure that the headers in the heart of the wall are the same size as in the face and extend at least 12 in 300 mm into the core or backing.

Thickness requirements of rubble stone walls. The minimum thickness for unreinforced masonry shear walls and for masonry foundation walls is also 8 in.
