Forget physics it does not exist in stranded deep.
The only functional differences that i have ever heard of are barrels vs buoy balls vs wood vs tyres on raft bases.
Building a foundation requires either wood sticks plank scrap clay bricks or corrugated scrap once a foundation is set the player will then be able to attach any sort of extension or addition.

Note that the foundation is part of the recipe for a wall so if you already placed a foundation you must do your crafting at the foundation worksite.
I created a corrugated square foundation x2 and i have enough corrugation scraps to create 2 floors.
So stick foundations and floors for me.
